An event held in different communities nationwide, Walk MS is hosted locally by the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Ohio Valley Chapter. Its mission is to raise funds for research and services to help those affected by multiple sclerosis.
Western & Southern associates are enthusiastic supporters of Walk MS. In 2018, associates raised $36,000 for the cause. Over the years, with corporate support and associate fundraising, Western & Southern has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the MS Society.
Associates’ enthusiastic support is also evident on Walk MS day in Cincinnati when you’ll find a sea of blue shirts worn by members of the Western & Southern team called Willie’s Walkers. Composed of Western & Southern associates with friends and family, Willie’s Walkers fielded one of the largest Walk MS teams in the country in 2018 – more than 1,000 people. The team is named after former Western & Southern Chairman William J. Williams.
According to the National MS Society, multiple sclerosis affects nearly one million people in the U.S. While the cause of MS is unknown, the impact of the disease is not. MS interrupts signals to the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord), which could affect everything from physical movement to problem solving ability. Symptoms are also broad, unpredictable and different for each individual. Some examples include numbness, memory loss, paralysis and blindness. These symptoms could be temporary or long-lasting, and those with MS can even experience new symptoms with each episode.
